The main limitation with hair transplant is limited supply of hair to cover the bald area. Many times when requirement of hair is more than the number of hair available from the scalp, we take help of body hair and extract them from different body areas and implant them on the scalp
Practically all the body hair can be extracted. But there are some preferences. Beard hair are the first choice after scalp hair. They are usually thicker than scalp hair, fast to grow and grow long. They are quite ‘sturdy’ and behave well when implanted on the scalp.

Next in line are chest, abdomen and back hair. These hair are vellus type of hair which are thin, slow to grow and don’t grow very long, thin in color. They are many times used as fillers to improve density. The softness of these hair make them suitable for use form frontal hair line and helps us to give more natural look to your hair line.
Next preferred are axillary and pubic hair which are little thicker and longer as compared to chest and back. but the number of grafts that can be obtained form these areas may be very small. The last preference are hair from hands and legs. In most of the patients they are really thin and short to make any visible difference to the results. But they are used when needed.
Procedure of body hair FUE
It is similar to scalp hair FUE with some modifications.
The pre – operative and post operative instructions are different and are communicated the patient depending upon the surgical plan. The extraction is technically more challenging with these thin and delicate hair roots. But if done properly, can give beautiful grafts. For different body areas, we need different types of punches, size differs, depth differs, angle and edge differs.
We use different varieties of specially designed punches depending upon body site, depth of the root and type of hair that a patient has. Implantation of these hair is same as scalp hair but planning differs and is one of the artistic thing to achieve natural looking results with these ‘less natural hair on scalp’. We are good at it! We know that.
